Wow, it has been almost six months since I graduated from yoga teacher training or written a post about yoga. I couldn’t wait to share where I am in my yoga practice now until I sat down to write. As of last week my practice has completely changed: I cancelled my autopay membership to my local yoga studio, started an online mediation course (Mindspo) and have transitioned into practicing at home more often. If you had asked me a few weeks ago about my practice I would have replied – I go to the studio 3-4 times a week, maybe get on my mat 2 times a week at home and meditate every morning for five minutes. Push that all aside, my yoga practice is shaping into something new =o)
Shifting my practice from studio to home
The reason I decided to cancel my membership had nothing to do with changing my yoga routine, instead it was a financial decision. In the next coming weeks I will be traveling and my social calendar is quickly filling up for the summer. I knew I would be going to the studio less often and after reevaluating my monthly budget I knew I would have to let something go in order to save for my travels.
Practicing at home is much different than in a studio but it will be nice to get back on my mat and work on my favorite flows and positions. I will continue to go to my studio but it will be more like once a week.
Yoga at home
With the decision made to cancel my membership I began to plan how I would continue my yoga practice at home. As a certified yoga instructor I know how to build flows and proper alignment, something I am very grateful for having learned during teacher training. It can be daunting to start practicing at home but a few years ago when I reintroduced yoga into my life all I did was practice at home. There weren’t as many videos online as there are now but I found a few I liked: Yogi Nora and Yoga with Adriene. I was still in school and living on a student budget and couldn’t afford the yoga classes in downtown Chicago so instead I looked for free videos online.
I have come very far since my college days and now mainly use the videos when I need inspiration for flows. It will definitely take motivation to continue my practice at home, it is much easier to go to the studio and follow my favorite teacher as she leads the class. I can’t wait to get back to my personal practice where I can focus on growing individually. There is nothing wrong with going to a studio, I love learning new flows, poses and socializing with other yogis but there is something intimate about practicing yoga at home.
On my mat
I put on a good playlist, depending on my mood I have a chill yoga playlist and for days where I want energy and get the heart rate going I put on my workout playlist. From there I begin in child’s pose taking in a few breaths and focusing my attention to my mat. Before YTT I was so impatient to get my practice started that often times I would just jump in, but now I take it slow. After a long day at the office I flow through a few cat/cows to warm up my spine and flow through a Sun Salutation A a few times. Once I’ve done a few downward dogs I move onto my Sun Salutation B, twice on both sides. After that it’s whatever my body is craving. Lately I’ve been working on improving my headstands and getting into the splits. It’s been a challenge to practice the splits and my goal is to be able to do it by the end of the year.

Currently I am not teaching at a specific studio but if you live in Orange County, California and would like to book a private session don’t hesitate to send me an email: dreamofadventures@gmail.com
Meditation
One of my favorite vloggers, Rochelle Fox, has put together an online meditation course – Mindspo which I started two days ago. Rochelle made this course as a tool to teach others meditation, because it saved her life. Years ago she was depressed and suffering from PTSD until she found meditation and through that has become a more positive person. I have been following her on youtube for a few years now and have loved watching her share her journey and what inspired her to start Mindspo.
Earlier last month Rochelle hosted her first ever Mindspo Retreat in Mykonos, Greece. It was such a success that Rochelle decided to celebrate by having a sale for the June admission of her online mediation course. It was a deal I couldn’t resist and I’ve been wanting to learn more about meditation for a while now. I started this course a few days ago and am already loving it. I can’t wait to see how my meditation practice will grow along with my yoga.

Get it girl! You look AMAZING, and I’m guessing you feel even better. Honestly, it takes even MORE discipline to move a practice to home, because like you said, it’s so much easier when someone is pushing you and holding you to it. We also ended up canceling our memberships because of financial reasons, and we’d love to get back to the studio, but it’s so nice to be able to also listen to your body and see what YOU want in that moment.
Also, I need to check out the meditation apps. I know I’ve got a stressful year coming up with a challenging round of kiddos, so I’m trying to prep myself with mental support!
Can’t wait to see what you’ve got going for the summer!

Personally I only do yoga at home and never have been to a studio. I know that this is not perfect, as I am not sure that I do all the poses right, but I simply can´t go anywhere else for practice with the kids and my job, so working out from home is my only option.
